[ Not everyone starts off wanting to, after all, or believing it is possible. He presumes Gortash does, since he seems someone who is driven and determined, but better not to assume. ]

[ On his own terms. Even if recent events might have him reconsidering some, or prepared to. He just isn't certain how. ]

And do you feel you are progressing towards that goal?

Impossible to progress something I am still awaiting to begin.

And what do you feel would begin this process for you?

More than temporary babysitters, for one.

Is that what you see the Wardens you have been assigned for a month as? Temporary babysitters?

It's what you are. So someone is responsible in emergencies. You are not granted further privileges and are not entitled to more, whether from me for the Admiral.

[bythelight]

That is true, we are partly here so you have someone assigned in an emergency. But if that is all you take from the experience, then I'm afraid you are wasting opportunities.

[ Which, for someone who is determined to graduate does not seem ideal. ]

I am not affording more to someone who is not contractually obligated to advocate for me after four weeks. [ Glower. ]

I'm not asking you to give anything. I'm trying to offer you what you can gain. If you aren't interested, however, we don't need to discuss it.

[ If Gortash is already decided on the matter, then that is his choice. ]

What you are offering me is hope in exchange for a liability that increases exponentially in a month's time, and any Inmate that agrees to that is as much an idiot as the one that offered it. I do not much appreciate that a permanent assignment is given my personal details whether I agree to it or not, but there is at least a contract in place that prevents them misusing it.

You haven't even listened to what I am offering you yet, Gortash. I told you that I thought there was something to gain, an opportunity you might be wasting. You seem to have decided the detail on your own.

Then arrive at your point or get on your way. Your services are otherwise not needed at present.

He keeps his expression neutral, regardless. ]

Each Warden you meet has the opportunity to become your permanent Warden. Some ask the Admiral directly to be paired with a specific inmate. If you communicated more with temporary Wardens, you might find one that suits you and be able to come to an understanding. You might be able to make a choice you prefer, before the choice is made for you.

The only thing I prefer is to not go back to being dead. The rest, I can handle. It's a contract for an assistant, not a marriage.

If you view Wardens as assistants, then would you not prefer an assistant who will understand you and work with you in that role? Not all Wardens will. If you leave the choice to the Admiral, you may be paired with a Warden who seeks a path you will not enjoy.

Then they will get nowhere and be no nearer their own goals than I am. [ If he's not feeling petty enough to deliberately set them back. ]

That doesn't seem very efficient. What I am suggesting is that you use these months as an opportunity to interview for the position, so you can achieve your goal as quickly as possible.

[ What he's suggesting is make some actual connections with people but 'interview' seems more Gortash's speed. ]

I have yet to work with a Warden that has proven incapable.

[ Which is to say he cares about how they take to what is required of them. ]

But you have worked little with them, beyond minimal requirements.

I work with them as much as they seek to work with me.

[bythelight]

But you inform them you want nothing more from them than the bare minimum of their duties.

Should I be wasting their time with further demands they cannot fulfill?

No, you said you work with them as much as they seek to work with you -- yet you also discourage them. So, that sounds to me like you aren't taking the opportunity to get to know your wardens, and who might work with you best.
